Uprootmap is an independent publication and calculator run by Mason Hahn. There is no newsroom and no parent company. No relocation brokerage sits behind the rankings. I write the pages, refresh the data, and fix a figure when it looks wrong.

A cost-of-living index turns a city into one percentage. You cannot spend that number. Those indexes price a basket most people do not buy. They skip the tax bill. They treat every household as the same size.

Uprootmap runs your situation. That means your occupation's local pay, or a remote salary you keep. It includes federal, state, and city income tax. It includes rent for the bedrooms you actually need, and the everyday costs that grow with the people in your home.

The point is not to tell you where to live. It is to narrow 387 places to a short list worth a real look. After that, check listings, talk to a tax person, and look at school districts the site does not rank.

Rent is Zillow's asking rent for each metro. Home values and household incomes come from the Census Bureau. Tax rules follow the IRS and each state's published schedules. Climate figures are NOAA normals. Other living costs are estimates from national baselines. Every source and every assumption is on the methodology page. The data was last refreshed 2026-09-04.

These are estimates. They will be wrong in the details. Nothing here is tax, financial, or housing advice. The disclaimer and terms of use say the same thing in legal language.

Asking rents and home values update when the sources publish new files, about monthly, and whenever a correction is made. State and federal tax schedules are updated when those agencies publish the next year. Household cost baselines and the leftover math change only after the methodology page changes.

City pages and comparisons update when the site is updated. They do not rebuild on their own for each visit. Guides, this about page, the terms, and the privacy policy show a date at the top, so you can see when the words last changed.

It earns nothing from where you decide to go. There are no affiliate links on movers, no sponsored city rankings, and no pay-to-rank.

There are no accounts. Your household stays on this device unless you ask for the monthly email. The privacy policy says what is collected and what is not. Ads are why the calculator stays free.
