Interstate movers must be registered
Any company that crosses a state line with your belongings needs active FMCSA household-goods authority. Verify a company by name, USDOT or MC number on the government's own site before signing anything; registration is a legal minimum, not a guarantee of good service.
How to hire without getting burned
Six habits that make a bad experience less likely. General information, not legal advice, and no guarantee against a bad outcome.
1.Get a binding estimate, in writing
A non-binding estimate can grow on moving day. A binding or binding-not-to-exceed estimate locks the price for the inventory listed; anything you add later can be charged extra, so list everything.
2.Insist on an in-home or video survey
A mover that prices a whole household from a phone call has not seen your stairs, your piano or your garage. Reputable interstate movers survey first.
3.Check the USDOT and MC numbers
Both should be on the estimate and the truck. Look them up on the FMCSA links above and make sure the legal name, authority status and complaint history match the company you are talking to.
4.Keep the deposit small
Established movers ask for little or nothing up front, and take a card. A large cash deposit before pickup is the most common feature of moving-scam complaints.
5.Read Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move
Interstate movers are required to give you this FMCSA booklet. It explains valuation (the mover's liability for damage), delivery windows and how to dispute a bill.
6.Red flags
No physical address, a company name that keeps changing, unmarked trucks, a price far below every other quote, or a demand to pay in full before your things are unloaded. Walk away.
How the estimate is made. Distance is the straight line between the two metros' Census centroids times 1.2 to approximate roads. Cost ranges come from a simple model fitted to published 2024–25 price ranges for full-service, container and truck-rental moves at one to four bedrooms; metros with a cost index above 1.15 get a 10% uplift. The model does not know your inventory, your building, the season or the market on the day, so treat every figure as a rough guess.
